Abu Simbel

The 5.30 start was a bit of a struggle but at least we'd chosen the easy option of flying from Aswan. The bus journey took three and a half hours and left the boat over an hour earlier! We saw the sun rise and arrived at Abu Simbel airport in the cool of the early morning. The journey was well worth it as the temples were magnificent. There are two. One to Rameses II and one to his wife Nefertari. The painted carvings and heiroglyphs inside are totally awe inspiring. The Egyptians claim its the eighth wonder of the world and I'm sure they're right. If you get the chance in there!

On the Nile

Here's our boat and the temple of Kom Ombu. Reading about the temples doesn't prepare you for how marvellous they are. The carvings that cover every surface are of astounding quality and it's hard to believe they are not new but 5000 years old. Our Egyptologist guide is hugely informative and we're enjoying learning loads. Karnak Temple was our first and was stunning. The downside is a touch of the trots but at least we've got that out of the way early.

Clouds over Europe

Arrived at Luxor yesterday evening after flying over the Austrian Alps, the Balkans and Greece. It was rather quicker than our trip there in September! We saw some fantastic views from the plane but there was frost outside the window so not sure how the photos will look. Now sailing up the Nile. Toured the amazing Karnak and Luxor Temples today with very knowledgable guide. Two more temples tomorrow.

Off Again!

Have not felt inspired to write since being home despite a busy time. We've been busy entertaining and caring cop the parents. My Mother's dementia is deteriorating quite rapidly. Now however we're taking mother-in-law on her annual holiday. We're going to Egypt again but having a week on the Nile as well as a week by the Red Sea. Now in the airport just about to board. Will post again asap. Elvie
